The best apps like Manta Comics and Toomics are WEBTOON, Tapas, Tappytoon, Pocket Comics, and Lezhin Comics. They all serve bite-sized digital comics made for phone reading. Manta is loved for its Unlimited plan and easy binge reading [source: Manta], so the best alternatives need strong libraries, fair pricing, and quick chapter access.
TLDR: Pick WEBTOON if you want tons of free comics. Choose Tapas if you like romance, fantasy, and novels too. If you read around 10 episodes per night, apps with free daily passes can save money, while coin apps may cost more after a week. For example, a fantasy fan who reads on the bus can use WEBTOON for free daily updates, then use Tappytoon for premium binge sessions.
1. WEBTOON
Best for: Free comics and huge variety.
WEBTOON is the big one. It has romance, action, horror, comedy, drama, slice of life, and a lot of wild stuff you did not know you needed. The app is clean. Episodes scroll smoothly. Updates are easy to track.
The best part is simple. Many comics are free. You can read a lot without paying. Some series use Fast Pass, which lets you pay to read new episodes early. If you can wait, you save money.
Honestly, it feels like WEBTOON has a comic for every mood. Sad vampire prince? Yes. Office romance? Of course. Talking cat with life advice? Probably.
- Pros: Huge library, many free titles, easy app design.
- Cons: Popular series can tempt you into paying for early access.
- Great pick if: You want the least risk and the most choice.
2. Tapas
Best for: Romance, fantasy, and web novels.
Tapas is a cozy app. It feels built for readers who love romance tropes, magical kingdoms, revenge plots, and dramatic cliffhangers. It also has novels, which is a nice bonus. You can bounce between comics and prose without installing another app.
Tapas uses Ink, its in-app currency. Some chapters are free. Some need Ink. Some series also let you wait for free access.
The catch is that the currency system can feel a bit fussy. You think you have enough Ink, then the next locked episode stares at you like a tiny paywall goblin. Still, the library is strong, especially for fantasy romance fans.
- Pros: Great romance and fantasy, novels included, many indie creators.
- Cons: Ink prices can add up if you binge hard.
- Great pick if: You love slow-burn love stories and reincarnation plots.
3. Tappytoon
Best for: Polished Korean webtoons.
Tappytoon is a strong choice if you like clean art, royal drama, dungeon adventures, and romantic tension that takes 60 chapters to become a hand touch. The app has many official translations. That matters. Bad translations can ruin a good story fast.
Chapters often cost tokens or points. Some series offer free timed access. The reading experience is smooth, and the art quality is often high.
It drives me crazy that premium chapters can disappear from your budget faster than snacks during a movie. Still, Tappytoon feels premium. If you liked Toomics for Korean comics, this one should be high on your list.
- Pros: Strong Korean titles, good translations, polished art.
- Cons: Can get pricey during binge reads.
- Great pick if: You want fantasy romance with shiny art.
4. Pocket Comics
Best for: Quick reads and daily unlocks.
Pocket Comics is a fun pick for readers who want something close to Manta and Toomics, but with more daily reward energy. It has romance, drama, BL, fantasy, and action. The app often gives free tickets or timed reading options.
It is good for casual readers. Open it once a day. Unlock an episode. Read during lunch. Repeat. Nice and simple.
The interface is not always as slick as the biggest apps. Expect to waste time tapping through offers if you are chasing free reads. But if you are patient, Pocket Comics gives you plenty to enjoy without paying every five minutes.
- Pros: Daily free options, solid romance library, fun for casual reading.
- Cons: Rewards and tickets can feel scattered.
- Great pick if: You like checking in every day for free episodes.
5. Lezhin Comics
Best for: Mature stories and premium comics.
Lezhin Comics is more grown-up than many comic apps. It has romance, drama, thriller, BL, GL, and mature titles. The stories often feel sharper and more intense. If WEBTOON is the giant comic mall, Lezhin feels more like a late-night bookstore with neon lights.
Lezhin uses coins. Many chapters are paid. Sales help, but this is not the cheapest app. Still, fans keep coming back because the catalog has many hard-to-find titles.
Use Lezhin when you want premium stories and do not mind paying for them. It is not ideal for endless free reading. It is better for readers who pick one or two series and follow them closely.
- Pros: Mature titles, strong drama, unique catalog.
- Cons: Less free content than WEBTOON.
- Great pick if: You want bold stories with higher stakes.
Quick Ranking
- WEBTOON — Best free choice.
- Tapas — Best for romance and novels.
- Tappytoon — Best for Korean fantasy romance.
- Pocket Comics — Best for daily free reading.
- Lezhin Comics — Best for mature premium stories.
Which One Should You Download First?
If you want the safest pick, start with WEBTOON. It is free-friendly and packed with series. If you want something closer to Manta’s binge feel, try Tapas or Tappytoon. If you liked Toomics because of mature or Korean titles, add Lezhin Comics too.
My simple advice? Install two apps. Use one free app for daily reading. Use one premium app for your favorite series. Your wallet will complain less. Your cliffhanger addiction will still win sometimes.
